Healthy Food Options in Washington County

Breakfast Programs
Hungry kids have a hard time learning. Be sure your child has breakfast before going to school – something healthy like fruit or cereal, not a bag of chips! Many schools have breakfast for students every day. If you can’t give your child breakfast at home, check with the school to see if they have a program and tell your child to eat the school meal so they have enough energy to think at school.

Free- and Reduced-Lunch Programs
Schools provide hot lunches each day. They are great options if your child doesn’t bring a bagged lunch from home. Depending on your family income, you may qualify for a free or reduced lunch price. No one at the school (except for the cafeteria manager) can tell if your child is receiving free or reduced meals, as all kids have the same lunch cards, so your privacy is respected.

How to Help Schools Receive Funds
Parents who think they might qualify to get the free and reduced lunch program should fill out an application even if they don’t plan for their kids to eat school lunches. Schools receive extra funds for every student who qualifies, providing additional resources to your child’s school.
