There are many scams targeted at people facing foreclosure. In general, you should think of anyone coming to your door with an offer as a scam. You need to be the one to reach out. Only work with HUD-approved agencies or directly with your lender. Call the number listed on the statements, notices and letters they send you.

Scams to watch out for:

• People who call themselves mortgage consultants/mortgage rescuers or offer foreclosure service
• Services that offer to come to you
• Asking for money before providing you a service
• Telling you to transfer the property deed to another person
• Promises that sound too good to be true (“We will save your credit.”)
